About
I’m Dustin. I live in Colorado with my family, and when I can get to the mountains I snowboard.
I taught myself computers as a kid. I built my first paid website around 14 and my first Linux server not long after. As a teenager I spent way more time than was wise in the late-’90s FTP and IRC scene, which is where I really learned networks, Unix, and how systems break. I walked away from all of that before college and never went back, but it’s a big part of why I take security seriously.
What I’m working on
Mostly memory. Language models are great at what they learned in training and bad at everything after it, so I spend a lot of my time on that gap:
- Continual learning. A memory that sits next to a served model on the GPU and lets it pick up a whole codebase in under a second, then keep up as the code changes, without retraining anything.
- Long context. An attention mechanism that can find something planted a million tokens back.
- Agents. Agent Neo is my open-source incident-investigation agent. The biggest thing it’s taught me so far is that a better harness beats a better checkpoint.
- Safety. A safety-first model built with Constitutional AI methods, as part of TensorWire’s Daisy Chain.
At my day job at Comcast I built the internal business-intelligence platform, and more recently an LLM layer on top of it that answers multi-hop questions with 98% accuracy at about 1/200th of the token cost. Getting there took a lot of data wrangling.
I try to be honest about results. I write the decision rule down before the run, I keep a control arm, and when I get something wrong I say so. Here’s one.
How I got here
I started in hardware, moved into ops, and ended up writing software because at a certain scale nothing else works. I didn’t plan on going back to code, but once I’d automated enough infrastructure I realized I liked building things more than babysitting them.
- Comcast: full-stack engineer. Built the internal BI platform from scratch, its LLM and RAG layer, and a company-wide PII compliance system.
- ADT: secure CI for their flagship mobile app and home-automation platform.
- Oildex: rebuilt their SaaS infrastructure, mainframe and all. Then NOAA, where I led moving weather.gov onto NOAA infrastructure.
- Markit on Unix ops, and Motorola Solutions deploying 911 dispatch systems for Nashville Metro and Colorado State Patrol.
- Sharp Shooter Imaging: kept a national photo-sales network running and PCI compliant.
- Copper Mountain Resort, then All Mountain Technologies, doing IT for 200+ small businesses around Vail. I once traded a website for a ski pass.
- Bullwhackers Casino: sysadmin on the gaming floor's systems.
- Aspen Systems: building Beowulf clusters for national labs.
I studied at the University of Northern Colorado and Red Rocks Community College.
